weather Bridgend 18°C

Bridgend County Borough Council have teamed up with local organisations such as the Wallich and Gwalia and other partners to support rough sleepers again this winter.

We are working in partnership to make sure that homeless people have a warm, safe place to sleep and can access a range of help and support including hot meals.

In the mornings, a "breakfast run" is available between 6:30am and 9am, which provides hot food and drink as well as sleeping bags, warm clothing, toiletries and other important items.

Between 9.30am and 12noon, a drop-in centre at The Wallich in Park Street provides a safe environment with washing facilities and telephone and computer access.

An afternoon drop-in service is available at The Zone in Dunraven Place in Bridgend town centre between 1.30pm to 4.30pm during the week, and between 9am and 12 noon on Saturdays.

At night, the "floor space scheme" which we launched last October, will be operating, providing a safe, dry and warm place to sleep. The floor space is available between 8pm and 8am at The Elms in Bridgend Industrial Estate, with extended hours on Bank Holidays or if the weather becomes severe.

The floor space is allocated on a daily basis, and people can apply between 3pm and 5pm through the Gwalia Local Support Hub which is based at the Brackla Street Centre.

Cllr Dhanisha Patel, Cabinet Member for Wellbeing and Future Generations said: "People become homeless for various reasons, and research has found that over a third of families in Britain are less than 2 pay packets away from homelessness.

"Working in partnership makes perfect sense as we share the ultimate aim of getting rough sleepers off the street and into full-time accommodation.

"If anyone is concerned about a rough sleeper, they can alert the local authority by using the Street Link app available at www.streetlink.org.uk

"It's a quick and easy way of ensuring that someone can get access to the help they need.

"The council's Housing Solutions team ensures that housing applications can be made all year round and at any time of the night or day."
